Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni warmly welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Italy as he arrived in Rome on Tuesday night for the final leg of his five nation tour, with both leaders set to hold talks aimed at strengthening the India Italy strategic partnership.
Greeting PM Modi on social media platform X, Meloni wrote: “Welcome to Rome, my friend!”, reflecting the close personal rapport between the two leaders that has grown over recent years.
PM Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with Meloni on Wednesday at the historic Villa Doria Pamphili. The two leaders are expected to adopt a joint declaration focused on expanding cooperation across several strategic sectors.
The Prime Minister will also meet Italian President Sergio Mattarella during the visit.
Sharing details of his arrival, PM Modi said he had landed in Rome for an official visit aimed at deepening ties between India and Italy.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the visit would help open a new chapter in bilateral relations.
“Scripting a new chapter in the India Italy Strategic Partnership. Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives in Rome on an official visit to Italy. He was warmly received at the airport by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Antonio Tajani of Italy,” Jaiswal posted on X.
He added that India and Italy shared a longstanding and multifaceted partnership and said the visit was expected to inject fresh momentum into bilateral cooperation.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the visit comes at a time when both countries are implementing the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025 to 2029, which aims to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, defence, clean energy, innovation, science and technology, and people to people ties.
The MEA said bilateral trade between the two nations reached USD 16.77 billion in 2025, while cumulative foreign direct investment from Italy into India stood at USD 3.66 billion between April 2000 and September 2025.
The ministry also highlighted growing cooperation in defence and security, along with expanding collaboration in clean energy and emerging technologies.
Officials said the visit would further reinforce India’s engagement with Europe, particularly in trade and investment, following the recent conclusion of the India European Union Free Trade Agreement negotiations.
