Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi will arrive in New Delhi on Wednesday on a three-day official visit to attend the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit, where she and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are expected to review the entire spectrum of bilateral cooperation and discuss key regional and global developments.
The visit, from July 1 to 3, comes at the invitation of Prime Minister Modi and marks Takaichi’s first official trip to India since assuming office.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the two leaders will assess progress across the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership while exploring ways to further strengthen cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
“The visit follows Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Tokyo in August 2025 for the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit and reflects the shared commitment of the two countries to further enhance the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership,” the MEA said in a statement.
The summit builds on recent high-level engagements between the two countries. On June 16, Prime Minister Modi met Takaichi on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France, where both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation across multiple sectors.
“Had a great interaction with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi of Japan. India and Japan will continue to deepen ties in diverse sectors, with a priority on trade and investment,” Modi had posted on X following the meeting.
Earlier in May, Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi visited New Delhi and called on Prime Minister Modi, reaffirming the importance of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership in promoting peace, stability and prosperity across the Indo-Pacific.
“Delighted to receive Mr Toshimitsu Motegi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan. Reaffirmed the vital role of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership in advancing peace, stability and prosperity across the Indo-Pacific and beyond,” Modi had said after the meeting.
During his visit, Motegi said both countries were advancing multiple initiatives under the Japan-India Joint Vision for the Next 10 Years, announced during Modi’s visit to Japan last year. The initiatives span security, trade, investment, innovation, economic security and people-to-people exchanges.
According to the Japanese Foreign Ministry, both sides also agreed to work together towards a strong and prosperous Indo-Pacific under the framework of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP), while pursuing concrete outcomes in investment, innovation, knowledge-sharing and economic growth.
Motegi also held talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on various aspects of bilateral cooperation.
India and Japan share a long-standing Special Strategic and Global Partnership, underpinned by deep cultural and civilisational ties. The two countries continue to strengthen collaboration through the convergence of India’s Act East Policy, SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision and Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI) with Japan’s Free and Open Indo-Pacific vision.
