Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and welcomed the recent understanding reached to end the conflict in West Asia, reiterating India’s longstanding position that disputes must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.
During the conversation, President Pezeshkian briefed Prime Minister Modi on the latest developments in the region and the way forward following the ceasefire understanding.
Prime Minister Modi welcomed the development and stressed the need for sustained efforts to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region.
He also underlined the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation and ensuring uninterrupted maritime commerce, reiterating India’s consistent view that all differences should be settled through peaceful dialogue and diplomatic engagement.
The latest conversation follows a series of discussions between the two leaders amid heightened tensions in West Asia.
During a phone call on March 21, Prime Minister Modi and President Pezeshkian had reviewed the regional security situation, with the Indian leader condemning attacks on critical infrastructure and emphasising the importance of keeping shipping lanes open, secure and free for international navigation.
Earlier, on March 12, Modi had also expressed concern over the escalating conflict in the region, highlighting the loss of civilian lives and damage to critical infrastructure.
The conversation comes against the backdrop of growing India-Iran engagement despite regional instability.
Last month, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, who visited New Delhi for the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, described the Chabahar Port as a cornerstone of India-Iran cooperation and expressed confidence that the India-developed port would emerge as a “golden gate” connecting India with Central Asia, the Caucasus and Europe.
Araghchi acknowledged that the project had slowed due to US sanctions but voiced hope that India would continue developing the strategic port, calling it vital not only for the two countries but also for regional connectivity.
He also praised India’s balanced ties across the Gulf region and expressed confidence that New Delhi could play a greater diplomatic role in promoting peace, security and stability in West Asia.
The latest exchange between Prime Minister Modi and President Pezeshkian underscores the two countries’ continued engagement on regional developments and India’s emphasis on dialogue, maritime security and regional stability.
