Kremlin confirms Russian President’s visit as India prepares to host BRICS leaders in September..reports Asian Lite News
Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend the upcoming BRICS Summit 2026 in New Delhi later this year under India’s chairmanship of the bloc, the Kremlin has confirmed.
According to the Russian Embassy in South Africa, Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov said President Putin is scheduled to participate in the summit on September 12 and 13 in the Indian capital.
“President of Russia Vladimir Putin will attend the BRICS summit in New Delhi on September 12-13,” the embassy said in a post on X, citing Ushakov.
The visit will mark Putin’s second trip to India within a year. The Russian President last visited New Delhi in December 2025 for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit.
The announcement comes amid continued efforts by India and Russia to deepen their long standing strategic partnership across trade, defence, energy and geopolitical cooperation.
Earlier this month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov travelled to India to attend the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and also held talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
During the meeting on May 14, Lavrov briefed PM Modi on the progress in bilateral cooperation since the last India-Russia Annual Summit. The discussions also covered major regional and global developments, including the conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia.
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi after the meeting, Lavrov said PM Modi had reaffirmed that he would visit Russia later this year.
“We are preparing for the BRICS summit. Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday reaffirmed that this year it’s his turn to make a visit to the Russian Federation. We will be preparing for this top-level summit,” Lavrov said.
He also reiterated Moscow’s commitment to expanding what he described as a “privileged strategic partnership” with India across multiple sectors.
BRICS currently comprises 11 emerging economies and developing nations, including Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates.
The grouping serves as a major platform for political and economic cooperation among emerging economies and focuses on issues related to global governance, development and multilateral coordination.
According to the official BRICS 2026 website, India’s chairmanship is being guided by the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”, reflecting a people centric and humanity first approach articulated by PM Modi during the 2025 BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
