Donald Trump says he could meet Iran’s president at the UN as Washington weighs its next move and Tehran sets conditions for reopening Hormuz, reports London Daily News Desk
US President Donald Trump has said he is open to meeting Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in New York this week, as Washington weighs its next move in the escalating conflict with Tehran.
Trump told Fox News he was in “deciding mode” on Iran and warned that “very big things” were coming, while leaving open the possibility of talks with Pezeshkian during the United Nations General Assembly.
Asked whether he would meet the Iranian president, Trump said he would “probably be open” to it. Pezeshkian is due in New York for the UN gathering.
Trump said Washington was considering several options, including a deal, continued economic pressure and military action. His comments came as tensions remained high nearly seven months after US and Israeli strikes on Iran.
Tehran has also signalled that it is prepared to negotiate, but only on conditions it has set. Iranian parliament speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Tehran had conveyed its demands to Washington through mediators.
Ghalibaf said Iran would not reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz unless its conditions were met and US commitments were honoured.
The waterway has remained a major flashpoint during the conflict because of its importance to global energy and commercial shipping. The latest developments leave diplomacy and further military escalation on the table as leaders gather in New York.
