Senior officials in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia have publicly emphasised friendship and cooperation, signalling a possible easing of tensions between the Gulf neighbours after months of strained relations.
A series of social media posts by senior political and government figures this week highlighted the close relationship between the two countries, following a period of public disagreement that had exposed differences between the region’s two largest Arab economies.
On Tuesday, Saudi General Entertainment Authority chairman Turki Alalshikh shared a photograph on X showing Saudi Defence Minister Khaled bin Salman alongside UAE Vice President Mansour bin Zayed. He said the photograph had been taken a few days earlier.
“Saudi Arabia and the UAE: A story of brotherly relations and a strong partnership,” he wrote.
The image was later shared by UAE presidential adviser Anwar Gargash, who wrote: “The biggest story in the Gulf is captured in a single photograph.”
The public messages follow months of tensions during which commentators from both countries engaged in heated exchanges online. Earlier this year, Saudi Arabia also launched a media campaign directed at its smaller Gulf neighbour.
Relations deteriorated publicly in December after Saudi Arabia accused Abu Dhabi of threatening its national security by supporting Yemeni separatists involved in a brief offensive.
The two countries have also differed on several regional issues, including conflicts in Yemen and Sudan, as well as developments in the Horn of Africa, where they have backed rival groups.
Their approaches to Iran have also diverged. Saudi Arabia supported Pakistani mediation efforts, while the UAE initially adopted a more hawkish position towards Tehran before the United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding last month.
The apparent improvement in relations comes as regional tensions have risen again. Hostilities involving the United States and Iran resumed this month, prompting renewed Iranian attacks across the Gulf. At the same time, Yemen’s Houthi movement, which is aligned with Tehran, has increased pressure by threatening a naval blockade targeting Saudi Arabia.
Senior media officials from both countries also issued closely aligned statements on Tuesday, highlighting the importance of the relationship and calling for accurate reporting.
UAE National Media Authority chairman Abdulla Alhamed and Saudi Media Minister Salman Aldosary both praised relations between the two countries and their leadership, while stressing that media organisations should reflect the strength of those ties.
“The role of responsible media is to counter anyone attempting to portray a misleading image of the relationship between the two countries and to ensure accuracy in all published information,” Aldosary wrote on X, while praising the “wise leadership in both countries”.
The coordinated public messaging has been widely interpreted as a sign that both governments are seeking to project unity amid heightened regional uncertainty. Although neither government has announced any formal diplomatic initiative, the statements from senior political and media figures mark a noticeable shift in tone after months of public disagreements.
The UAE and Saudi Arabia remain key economic, political and security partners within the Gulf, and their relationship has long been regarded as central to regional stability. Recent developments suggest both sides are seeking to reinforce that partnership as they confront shared security concerns and an increasingly volatile regional environment.
