The United States has announced a major military-backed operation to escort commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, in what President Donald Trump described as a humanitarian initiative aimed at freeing stranded ships amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
Trump said several countries had approached Washington for assistance after vessels became “locked up” in the strategic waterway despite having no involvement in the ongoing regional conflict. He said the effort, named “Project Freedom,” would begin Monday morning, Middle East time.
“For the good of Iran, the Middle East, and the United States, we will guide their ships safely out of these restricted waterways,” Trump said, adding that the mission was intended to help “neutral and innocent bystanders” resume normal trade operations.
He noted that some ships were facing deteriorating conditions, including shortages of food and essential supplies required for large crews. “Many of these ships are running low on food and everything else necessary to stay on board in a healthy and sanitary manner,” he said.
Trump also confirmed ongoing diplomatic engagement with Iran, suggesting that discussions could lead to “something very positive for all,” while warning that any disruption to the operation would be met with forceful response.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said its forces would support the mission to “restore freedom of navigation” through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime trade routes.
According to CENTCOM, the deployment will include guided-missile destroyers, more than 100 aircraft across land and sea, unmanned systems, and around 15,000 service personnel. The Strait carries roughly a quarter of global seaborne oil trade along with significant fuel and fertiliser shipments.
Adm. Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander, said the mission was essential for regional stability and global economic security.
The State Department has also launched a coordination framework called the Maritime Freedom Construct to improve information sharing with international partners as part of the wider operation.
