The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Youssouf Ali, has welcomed the high-level tripartite summit held on March 16, 2026, in Conakry by the leaders of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone to strengthen border cooperation and promote regional stability under the Mano River Union (MRU).
In a statement, the Chairperson praised the three countries for choosing dialogue and diplomacy to address ongoing border tensions, in line with African Union principles, including the Constitutive Act and the Non-Aggression and Common Defence Pact. He described the move as a significant step towards peaceful conflict resolution.
Ali commended the spirit of cooperation, good neighbourliness and shared commitment to regional stability demonstrated by the three West African nations. He said the outcome highlights the effectiveness of African-led solutions to African challenges and reinforces the importance of resolving disputes through peaceful means.
He also acknowledged the constructive role played by ECOWAS and international partners in supporting the process, noting that their efforts contributed to the positive outcome. The Chairperson said the agreement could serve as a model for conflict prevention and resolution across the continent, while strengthening the foundations for long-term peace, security and development in the Mano River region.
The Chairperson further welcomed the decision by the three countries to convene a Mano River Union summit within a month, aimed at revitalising the bloc and enhancing dialogue on peace, security and development.
Reaffirming the African Union’s support, Ali said the organisation would continue to work with the governments and people of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone to consolidate progress and advance regional peace and stability.
