Liberia’s Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti arrived in New Delhi on Thursday for an official visit, during which she is scheduled to hold talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
The visit is expected to provide an opportunity for India and Liberia to discuss bilateral relations and ways to further strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
Welcoming Nyanti to India, the Ministry of External Affairs said, “Warmly welcome Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti of Liberia on her arrival in New Delhi. The visit provides an opportunity to further strengthen the warm and close ties between India and Liberia.”
Her visit comes days after Jaishankar met a parliamentary delegation from Liberia in New Delhi as part of a peer-learning programme focused on South-South cooperation.
Following the meeting on Tuesday, Jaishankar said on X: “A pleasure to meet a Parliamentary Delegation from Liberia visiting India for the IBSA-funded peer-learning programme. Exchanged views on development programmes, sharing the experience of Jan-Dhan Yojana, MUDRA Yojana, SVAnidhi, Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Yojana, and Mission Amrit Sarovar. Appreciated their interest and reaffirmed our commitment towards deeper Global South partnership,”
The Liberian parliamentary delegation included members of the Senate and House of Representatives, as well as members of the Women’s Legislative Caucus of Liberia. It was led by Ellen-Attoh Wreh and included representatives of UN Women.
The delegation is visiting India from August 10 to 15 as part of a South-South Peer Learning Mission. The programme is organised with the support of UN Women and funded by the governments of India, Brazil and South Africa through the India, Brazil and South Africa Fund, administered by the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation.
The delegation also met Union Minister for Women and Child Development Annapurna Devi in New Delhi on Tuesday.
According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs, the discussions covered areas of shared interest, with both sides expressing their commitment to deepening cooperation within the framework of South-South cooperation.
“The Minister, Annapurna Devi, underlined India’s approach of viewing women as active agents of national development and highlighted India’s legislative, programmatic and institutional commitment to women’s empowerment, including in the areas of women’s political representation, gender-responsive governance and budgeting, institutional responses to violence against women, the care economy and women’s leadership in local governance,” the Ministry stated.
India and Liberia have maintained friendly relations over the years, with Liberia supporting India’s candidature at various United Nations forums.
India established a resident diplomatic Mission in Monrovia, Liberia’s capital, in 2021, according to the Indian Embassy in Liberia. The mission’s opening was seen as an important step towards strengthening diplomatic engagement and expanding existing bilateral relations.
The current visit by Nyanti comes at a time when both countries are seeking greater engagement through South-South cooperation and wider Global South partnerships. Talks in New Delhi are expected to provide an opportunity to take forward those ties and identify areas for deeper cooperation.
