External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Tuesday met a parliamentary delegation from Liberia visiting India under a peer learning programme and reiterated New Delhi’s commitment to deeper cooperation with countries of the Global South.
The delegation includes members of Liberia’s Senate and House of Representatives, along with members of the country’s Women’s Legislative Caucus. It is being led by Ellen-Attoh Wreh and includes representatives from UN Women.
Jaishankar said discussions covered India’s development programmes and the experience of implementing several initiatives aimed at financial inclusion, livelihoods, food security, water access and social welfare.
“A pleasure to meet a Parliamentary Delegation from Liberia visiting India for the IBSA-funded peer-learning programme. Exchanged views on development programmes, sharing the experience of Jan-Dhan Yojana, MUDRA Yojana, SVAnidhi, Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Yojana, and Mission Amrit Sarovar. Appreciated their interest and reaffirmed our commitment towards deeper Global South partnership,” Jaishankar wrote on X.
The Liberian delegation is visiting India from August 10 to 15 as part of a South-South Peer Learning Mission. The programme is organised with the support of UN Women and funded by the governments of India, Brazil and South Africa through the India, Brazil and South Africa (IBSA) Fund.
The fund is administered by the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation and supports development cooperation and knowledge sharing among countries of the Global South.
Earlier on Tuesday, Minister of Women and Child Development Annapurna Devi also met the Liberian delegation in New Delhi.
According to the Ministry of Women and Child Development, the delegation was briefed on India’s initiatives aimed at promoting women-led development and strengthening women’s participation in governance and public life.
“The Minister, Smt. Annapurna Devi, underlined India’s approach of viewing women as active agents of national development and highlighted India’s legislative, programmatic and institutional commitment to women’s empowerment, including in the areas of women’s political representation, gender-responsive governance and budgeting, institutional responses to violence against women, the care economy and women’s leadership in local governance,” the ministry said.
The discussions covered a range of areas of shared interest, with both sides expressing an interest in strengthening cooperation between India and Liberia within the broader framework of South-South cooperation.
The visit provides an opportunity for Liberian lawmakers to learn from India’s experience in implementing public welfare and development programmes, while also allowing the two countries to exchange perspectives on governance and women’s empowerment.
India has increasingly highlighted South-South cooperation as an important element of its international engagement, particularly through sharing development experiences, technical expertise and institutional practices with partner countries.
The IBSA framework, bringing together India, Brazil and South Africa, has also supported development-oriented cooperation with countries across the Global South through its dedicated fund.
The Liberian delegation’s programme in India is expected to focus on peer learning and exchanges with Indian institutions, with particular attention to initiatives that can contribute to inclusive development and greater participation of women in decision-making.
The meetings in New Delhi underline the broader effort by India and Liberia to expand bilateral engagement while strengthening cooperation through multilateral and South-South platforms.
