Trump campaign raises $141m in May

Although the expenditure details for May remain undisclosed, the substantial sum could narrow the fundraising gap with Biden….reports Asian Lite News

In May, Donald Trump’s campaign and the Republican National Committee amassed a staggering $141 million in donations, despite the recent guilty verdict in Trump’s criminal hush money trial.

While the Federal Election Commission won’t require disclosure until later, the early release of these figures suggests the campaign’s confidence in the support garnered from Trump’s base, signalling continued momentum for his potential White House return.

Contrastingly, President Joe Biden’s campaign has yet to reveal its May fundraising totals. April saw Trump and the GOP surpass Biden and the Democratic National Committee in fundraising, highlighting a significant shift in financial support.

Although the expenditure details for May remain undisclosed, the substantial sum could narrow the fundraising gap with Biden. Trump’s campaign disclosed receiving over two million donations averaging $70.27, with a notable surge in online contributions following the trial verdict. About a quarter of these donors were new supporters.

Trump’s advisors emphasized the public’s rejection of what they perceive as Biden’s corrupt practices, anticipating a significant impact on the upcoming election. In response, Biden’s campaign spokesman criticized Trump’s reliance on wealthy backers, framing it as support for a “white-collar crook.”

Notably, Trump’s campaign celebrated a historic achievement, raising over $50 million online within 24 hours of the verdict announcement. This marked Trump as the first former president and presumptive nominee to face a criminal conviction, yet still attract substantial financial backing.

Meanwhile, Trump has said that he will appeal his conviction on all counts in the hush money trial in New York City.  Speaking at a press conference in Midtown Manhattan, Trump said: “We’re going to be appealing this scam,” one day after he was convicted in the trial.

A jury in New York City had found Trump guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records in a bid to hide hush money payment of $130,000 in 2016 to porn star Stormy Daniels, Xinhua news agency reported.

Trump continued to attack the judge and stressed the trial was “rigged”. “As far as the trial itself, it was very unfair,” he said.

Trump said his team would appeal on multiple things, including the allegation, that the court blocked the most crucial witness from his side. Both Trump’s supporters and critics showed up outside the Trump Tower building on Friday.

A sentencing hearing for the hush money trial has been set for July 11, shortly before the Republican National Convention. Trump and US President Joe Biden are expected to have their first debate on June 27 in Atlanta, Georgia.
