India celebrates Pravasi power

The three-day Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention, themed “Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat,” has drawn participants from over 50 countries…reports Asian Lite News

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday addressed the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention, emphasizing the significant role of the Indian diaspora in connecting with their roots and carrying forward Indian ethos globally. Speaking at the event, organized in collaboration with the Odisha government, the Prime Minister lauded the diaspora’s value systems and their seamless integration into global societies.

“In just a few days, the Mahakumbh will start in Prayagraj. Festivals like Makar Sankranti and Magh Bihu are approaching, creating a joyful atmosphere. On this day in 1915, Mahatma Gandhi returned to India after a long period abroad. Your presence here at this festive time adds to the spirit,” PM Modi remarked.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring the welfare and safety of the diaspora during crises, highlighting recent advancements in consular services. “Your safety and welfare are our top priorities. Over the last decade, our embassies have become more proactive. Previously, many faced challenges accessing consular facilities. Now, these issues are being addressed with 14 new embassies and consulates opened in the last two years,” he said. He also noted the expansion of the OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) card to include PIOs (Persons of Indian Origin) of the seventh generation in Mauritius.

PM Modi paid tribute to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, whose vision was instrumental in initiating the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas program. “This edition of PBD is special as it follows the birth centenary of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. His vision has transformed this event into an institution strengthening India-diaspora bonds,” he stated.

Highlighting Odisha’s rich heritage, PM Modi spoke about significant historical and cultural landmarks, such as Udaygiri, Konark, and Tamralipti. He noted the ancient maritime connections between Odisha and regions like Bali, Sumatra, and Java, underscoring India’s historical influence on global trade and culture. Referring to King Ashoka’s transition to peace, he said, “India’s heritage allows us to guide the world toward a future rooted in wisdom, not warfare.”

Addressing the diaspora as “Rashtradoot” (ambassadors of the nation), PM Modi expressed gratitude for their contributions. “Your love and blessings stay with me. Your value systems make you respected worldwide, and global leaders often praise your contributions to their countries while retaining India’s spirit in your hearts,” he said.

The three-day Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention, themed “Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat,” has drawn participants from over 50 countries. The event serves as a vital platform to connect and engage with the Indian diaspora, facilitating interaction and collaboration to further India’s development goals.

The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention is a flagship initiative of the Government of India that celebrates the contributions of the Indian diaspora to the nation’s growth and global presence. This year’s convention is being held in Bhubaneswar from January 8 to 10.
