India Tourism Gets Boost

In the Northeast, connectivity and infrastructure upgrades are planned across Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. Preservation of temples and monasteries, along with the creation of pilgrimage centres, aims to enhance spiritual tourism circuits in the region

India’s tourism sector is set for accelerated growth following a significant push in the Union Budget 2026–27, which positions the industry as a strategic engine for employment, foreign exchange earnings and balanced regional development.

According to an official factsheet, tourism’s total contribution to India’s GDP stands at 5.22 per cent, with a direct share of 2.72 per cent, as per the India Tourism Data Compendium 2025 by the Ministry of Tourism. The sector supports 13.34 per cent of total employment — including 5.82 per cent in direct jobs — underlining its multiplier impact across hospitality, transport, handicrafts and allied services.

The Budget outlines targeted interventions to strengthen institutional capacity, enhance service quality and improve destination competitiveness. A key focus area is destination development, with plans for heritage and experiential site upgrades, digital knowledge grids for tourism assets and the promotion of nature-based and wildlife tourism.

In the Northeast, connectivity and infrastructure upgrades are planned across Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. Preservation of temples and monasteries, along with the creation of pilgrimage centres, aims to enhance spiritual tourism circuits in the region.

Five major destinations across Purvodaya states will be developed with enhanced connectivity supported by 4,000 e-buses, marking a shift towards greener mobility solutions. Additionally, five regional medical hubs are proposed to strengthen India’s standing as a global medical tourism destination.

Cultural heritage conservation also features prominently. Fifteen archaeological sites — including Lothal, Dholavira, Rakhigarhi, Adichanallur, Sarnath, Hastinapur and Leh Palace — will be developed into vibrant experiential destinations blending conservation with visitor engagement.

Eco-tourism diplomacy receives a global spotlight with India set to host the first Global Big Cat Summit, bringing together representatives from 95 countries. The move reinforces India’s leadership in wildlife conservation and nature tourism.

Skill development forms another cornerstone of the tourism roadmap. A National Institute of Hospitality will be established to bridge skill gaps and align academic training with industry needs. Additionally, a pilot programme will upskill 10,000 tourist guides at iconic sites in partnership with premier institutions, aiming to enhance service standards and visitor satisfaction.

With its integrated approach spanning infrastructure, sustainability, heritage conservation and workforce development, the Union Budget 2026–27 signals strong intent to transform tourism into a resilient, high-impact growth driver — one capable of generating jobs, stimulating investment and promoting inclusive development across India’s regions.
