Five Fasting Foods to Savour This Festive Season

Navratri brings nine days of devotion, prayer and celebration across India, with devotees worshipping Goddess Durga and following different fasting traditions. Alongside religious rituals, food remains an important part of the festival, with special dishes prepared using ingredients permitted during vrat.

From savoury snacks to traditional sweets, Navratri fasting recipes offer plenty of variety for those observing the fast throughout the festival or on selected days. Sabudana, buckwheat flour, water chestnut flour, potatoes and makhana are among the ingredients commonly used to prepare festive meals.

Here are five popular dishes to consider for your Navratri menu.

1. Sabudana Khichdi

Sabudana khichdi is a familiar favourite during Navratri. Made with tapioca pearls, peanuts and potatoes, it combines soft textures with a gentle crunch. The ingredients are usually cooked with ghee or an oil suitable for fasting, along with cumin and other permitted seasonings.

A squeeze of lemon can add freshness, while coriander may be used as a garnish according to individual fasting customs. Getting the texture right is key to a good sabudana khichdi, as properly soaked pearls help prevent the dish from becoming sticky.

2. Kuttu Ki Poori

Buckwheat flour, known as kuttu ka atta, is widely used in North Indian fasting recipes. It is commonly made into pooris that are deep-fried and served hot.

Kuttu ki poori is often paired with vrat wale aloo, creating a filling combination for a festive meal. Since buckwheat flour behaves differently from regular wheat flour, the dough may need potatoes or another suitable binding ingredient to help it hold together.

3. Singhare Ke Atte Ka Halwa

Water chestnut flour, or singhare ka atta, is another ingredient associated with Navratri cooking. It can be used to prepare a rich halwa with ghee, sugar and water or milk, depending on the recipe.

The mixture is cooked until it thickens and develops a smooth consistency. Cardamom and chopped nuts can add flavour and texture, making the dessert a popular choice for those who want something sweet during the festive period.

4. Vrat Wale Aloo

Potatoes are a versatile ingredient in fasting meals. Vrat wale aloo are generally prepared with cumin, green chillies and rock salt, without onion and garlic.

The potatoes can be cooked as a dry preparation or made into a light curry, depending on regional traditions and personal preferences. Served with kuttu ki poori or singhare ke atte ki roti, they make a simple and satisfying festive meal.

5. Makhana Kheer

Makhana, also known as fox nuts, is frequently used in fasting recipes. For makhana kheer, the nuts are simmered in milk with sugar or another preferred sweetener until the mixture becomes creamy.

Cardamom, almonds and cashews can be added for extra flavour. The dessert can be served warm or chilled, making it a versatile addition to the Navratri menu.

Fasting rules differ between households and regions, so ingredients such as salt, cooking oil, spices and garnishes should be chosen according to individual vrat practices. With a little planning, these traditional dishes can bring variety and flavour to the nine-day celebration.
