Lula Wins Brazil Presidential Election for Fourth Term

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has won Brazil’s presidential run-off, securing another four years in office. The victory marks a comeback for the veteran leader, who first became president in 2003….reports Asian Lite News Desk

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has won re-election in Sunday’s presidential run-off, defeating Liberal Party candidate Flavio Bolsonaro in a comeback victory that secures him a fourth term in office.

Lula, who first emerged as a prominent trade union leader in the 1970s, overcame Bolsonaro despite his rival’s lead in the first round of voting. He is scheduled to begin his new four-year term on January 5, 2027.

Born in October 1945 in northeastern Brazil, Lula was the seventh child in a poor rural family. He gradually rose to prominence in the early 1970s as a trade union leader, becoming a prominent voice for working-class Brazilians and a leading figure in the struggle against military rule.

In 1980, he co-founded the Workers’ Party (PT), which later became the political platform for his presidential ambitions. Following a landslide victory in the 2002 presidential election, Lula became Brazil’s first president from a working-class background.

He secured re-election in 2006, with his administration gaining recognition for social welfare initiatives, particularly the Bolsa Familia cash transfer programme. The scheme helped lift millions of Brazilians out of poverty by providing financial assistance to eligible families.

However, Lula’s political career was later overshadowed by corruption investigations. In 2014, Brazilian authorities launched Operation Car Wash, a wide-ranging investigation into corruption involving public officials and businesses.

Lula was investigated, convicted and imprisoned in connection with corruption charges. In March 2021, Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court annulled all his convictions in the cases, clearing the way for his return to electoral politics.

He contested the 2022 presidential election and defeated then-President Jair Bolsonaro, Flavio Bolsonaro’s father. The victory made Lula the first Brazilian president to be elected to three terms by popular vote.

His latest victory marks another significant chapter in a political career spanning several decades, from trade union activism to the country’s highest office.

Lula advocates a greater role for the government in the economy, stronger social welfare policies and enhanced protection for workers’ rights. His political agenda has focused on tackling poverty, reducing inequality and expanding access to social support programmes.

On foreign policy, he has supported Brazil’s active engagement in international affairs, placing particular emphasis on cooperation among BRICS nations and stronger ties with countries in the Global South.

Relations with China have also remained an important part of Lula’s diplomatic agenda. He has promoted closer bilateral cooperation and supported efforts to build a China-Brazil community with a shared future, aimed at contributing to a more just world and a more sustainable planet.

Lula’s return for a fourth presidential term is expected to shape Brazil’s domestic and international priorities over the coming years, with social policy, workers’ rights and international cooperation remaining central to his political approach.
