Fresh from ending their long wait for an ODI World Cup title earlier this year, India will head into the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup with renewed confidence and a chance to create more history on the global stage.
While the team’s primary objective will be to secure its first ever Women’s T20 World Cup title, several of India’s leading players are also closing in on significant personal milestones that could make the tournament even more memorable.
The competition, which will be held in England and Wales, begins for India with a high profile clash against Pakistan in Birmingham on June 14. The team will then face the Netherlands, South Africa, Bangladesh and Australia in Group A as they bid to reach the knockout stages.
Among the players attracting attention ahead of the tournament is captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who is on the verge of a historic achievement.
The experienced batter is just four appearances away from becoming the first player in international cricket, men’s or women’s, to reach 200 T20 International matches. Harmanpreet currently has 196 T20I caps and is expected to achieve the landmark during the World Cup if India progress deep into the tournament.
The milestone carries added significance given that Harmanpreet made her T20 International debut during the inaugural Women’s T20 World Cup in England in 2009. Seventeen years later, she is poised to reach the unprecedented mark in the same country where her international T20 journey began.
The tournament will also mark another notable achievement for the India captain. Harmanpreet is set to feature in her 10th Women’s T20 World Cup, placing her among a select group of players who have appeared in every edition of the competition since its inception.
She joins an elite list that includes some of the most celebrated names in women’s cricket, such as Ellyse Perry, Chamari Athapaththu, Marizanne Kapp, Stafanie Taylor, Sophie Devine and Suzie Bates.
Another Indian star approaching a major milestone is all rounder Deepti Sharma, who continues to establish herself as one of the leading performers in women’s cricket.
Already the highest wicket taker in Women’s T20 Internationals, Deepti is now closing in on the historic 200 wicket mark. If she reaches the milestone during the tournament, she will become the first woman cricketer to claim 200 wickets in T20 International cricket.
Her achievements with both bat and ball have already placed her in a category of her own. Deepti remains the only cricketer, male or female, to have scored more than 1,000 T20 International runs while also taking at least 150 wickets.
A strong World Cup campaign could see her extend that remarkable record while moving closer to another historic landmark.
While individual achievements are expected to dominate headlines, India’s focus remains firmly on winning the trophy that has so far eluded them.
Since the Women’s T20 World Cup was introduced in 2009, India have established themselves as one of the most consistent teams in the competition. The side has reached the semi finals on five occasions, in 2009, 2010, 2016, 2018 and 2023, demonstrating its ability to compete with the world’s best teams.
India’s closest brush with the title came in 2020 when they reached the final in Australia. However, their hopes of lifting the trophy were dashed by the hosts, who secured a comprehensive victory in front of a record crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The team’s fortunes changed earlier this year when they captured their maiden Women’s ODI World Cup title, ending years of disappointment in global tournaments. That triumph was built around a talented core featuring Jemimah Rodrigues, Shafali Verma, Smriti Mandhana and Richa Ghosh, all of whom are expected to play pivotal roles again in the T20 format.
With a blend of experienced campaigners and emerging talent, India will arrive in England carrying both momentum and expectation. The prospect of historic individual milestones adds another layer of intrigue, but the biggest prize remains the one that has escaped them for nearly two decades.
If Harmanpreet’s side can combine its recent success with another strong tournament performance, India could finally secure the Women’s T20 World Cup title and cement its place among the dominant forces in world cricket.
