Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno on Wednesday convened an emergency security meeting following a deadly drone strike near the Chad-Sudan border, ordering the immediate and complete closure of the frontier, according to a statement from the presidency.
According to Xinhua, the attack resulted in several Chadian casualties, with local media reports putting the death toll at 16. The strike has heightened tensions in the already volatile border region, which has been affected by spillover from Sudan’s ongoing conflict.
The presidency said Deby directed Prime Minister Allamaye Halina to dispatch a government delegation to the affected area to assess the extent of human and material losses. As reported by Xinhua, the delegation is expected to evaluate the damage and coordinate an official response.
In a strong warning, the president also instructed the National Army to respond decisively to any attacks originating from Sudan. Xinhua reported that Deby emphasised the need for vigilance and readiness as security concerns escalate along the border.
Chad shares a long and porous frontier with Sudan, where fighting has been ongoing since 2023 between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. According to Xinhua, the continued instability in Sudan has increasingly posed security challenges for neighbouring countries, including Chad.
The latest incident underscores the growing risk of cross-border violence and its potential to further destabilise the region, Xinhua reported.
