Twelve Indian nationals were killed in a deadly explosion at a gas facility in Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatari authorities confirmed on Monday, prompting the Indian Embassy in Doha to launch efforts to assist affected families and repatriate the victims’ remains.
In a statement posted on X, the Embassy of India in Qatar expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the incident, which occurred on Sunday night.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the departed souls,” the embassy said.
The mission added that Qatari authorities had confirmed that all injured individuals were in stable condition and receiving appropriate medical treatment.
The embassy said it was working closely with local authorities to provide assistance to affected Indian nationals and their families, including facilitating the early return of the mortal remains of those who died.
According to Qatar’s Ministry of Interior, 13 people were killed and 66 others injured following a technical malfunction during operations at a factory in Ras Laffan Industrial City.
The ministry said investigations were underway to establish the exact circumstances of the incident and determine its technical causes. Authorities said the findings would help guide any legal and technical measures required in response to the accident.
Officials also stated that no leaks resulting from the explosion had been detected that could threaten public safety or the surrounding environment.
The Ministry of Interior extended its condolences to the families of the victims and said emergency and investigative procedures were continuing.
In a separate statement, QatarEnergy said an operational incident occurred during the startup of activities at Ras Laffan Industrial City, triggering an explosion and fire at the Barzan local gas supply facility on the evening of June 21.
The company said emergency response teams were deployed immediately and succeeded in bringing the fire under control.
QatarEnergy added that it would continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
The incident has raised concerns over industrial safety at one of Qatar’s key energy hubs, while authorities continue efforts to determine the cause of the blast.
