External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Tuesday expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and injuries caused by a deadly explosion at Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, which claimed the lives of 12 Indian nationals.

Offering condolences to the families of the victims, Jaishankar said the Indian Embassy in Doha was in constant contact with Qatari authorities and was extending all possible assistance to those affected by the tragedy.

“Deeply saddened by the loss of lives and injuries, including of Indian nationals, in the explosion at Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City. As further details emerge, our embassy continues to be in touch with Qatari authorities, and is reaching out to render assistance to the families of Indian nationals affected by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families,” Jaishankar posted on X.

The Embassy of India in Qatar said Qatari authorities had confirmed that 12 Indian nationals were among those killed in the incident, which occurred on Sunday night.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the departed souls. Qatari authorities have also confirmed that all those who got injured in the incident are in stable condition and are receiving appropriate medical treatment,” the embassy said in a post on X.

The mission added that it was working closely with Qatari authorities to provide support to affected families and facilitate the early repatriation of the mortal remains of the deceased.

According to Qatar’s Ministry of Interior, 13 people were killed and 66 others injured following a technical malfunction during an operation at a factory in Ras Laffan Industrial City.

Authorities said investigations were continuing to determine the exact cause of the incident and identify the technical factors involved. The ministry noted that no leaks resulting from the explosion had been detected that could pose a threat to public safety or the surrounding environment.

The ministry also conveyed its condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.

QatarEnergy said the incident occurred during the startup of operations at Ras Laffan Industrial City and led to an explosion and fire at the Barzan local gas supply facility on the evening of June 21. Emergency response teams were immediately deployed, and the fire has since been brought under control.

The company said it would continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
