Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi reaffirmed the longstanding friendship between India and Egypt during a meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, with both leaders underscoring their commitment to strengthening cooperation across a range of strategic sectors.
Following the meeting, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the enduring nature of bilateral ties, stating that India deeply values its relationship with Egypt.
“India cherishes the long-standing friendship with Egypt,” the Prime Minister said.
The interaction reflected the growing momentum in India-Egypt relations, which are rooted in centuries of civilisational exchanges and were further strengthened during the era of the Non-Aligned Movement through the close cooperation of leaders Jawaharlal Nehru and Gamal Abdel Nasser.
In recent years, the partnership has expanded significantly, encompassing trade, defence, culture and strategic cooperation.
Egypt remains one of India’s key partners in Africa and the Arab world. Bilateral trade between the two countries has surpassed USD 7 billion annually, with India exporting engineering goods, chemicals and textiles, while importing crude oil and fertilisers from Egypt.
Defence ties have also deepened through joint military exercises, training programmes and discussions on technology cooperation.
The meeting comes more than three years after President El-Sisi’s landmark visit to India as Chief Guest at the Republic Day celebrations in January 2023. During that visit, the two nations elevated their relationship to a Strategic Partnership, opening new avenues for cooperation in political, economic, security and cultural fields.
Officials said discussions between the two leaders focused on enhancing collaboration in renewable energy, digital technologies, defence manufacturing and other emerging sectors.
The leaders also exchanged views on issues affecting the Global South, including food security, climate change and the need for a more equitable global economic order.
India and Egypt have increasingly coordinated their positions on international issues, with both countries advocating stronger representation for developing nations in global decision making forums.
The latest meeting is expected to provide fresh impetus to bilateral engagement and reinforce India’s efforts to deepen its partnerships across Africa and West Asia.
As New Delhi continues to expand its outreach to key regional partners, Egypt remains central to India’s strategic and economic engagement with the Arab world and the African continent
