Rail Coach Factory (RCF), Kapurthala, is set to roll out its first rake comprising 19 LHB broad gauge passenger coaches for Bangladesh Railway on Wednesday, the Ministry of Railways said.
The first rake consists of three AC Sleeper Cars, three AC Chair Cars, 11 Non-AC Chair Cars and two Power Cars. According to the ministry, the coaches feature several design modifications developed specifically to meet the operational and passenger requirements of Bangladesh Railway.
The coaches include specially designed reclining chairs with stainless steel armrests and footrests, offering multiple reclining positions for passenger comfort.
Several passenger-focused facilities have also been incorporated, including fans in AC coaches, integrated CCTV surveillance, passenger alarm systems, partially openable windows, a Baby Care Room and a Prayer Room.
The coaches have also been designed to meet specific operating conditions in Bangladesh. Their roof structures have been strengthened to withstand additional loads associated with passengers travelling on the roof during periods of heavy traffic, the ministry said.
A major technological feature is the incorporation of crashworthy design provisions compliant with European Standard EN 15227. The requirement led to a comprehensive redesign of the car body shell to improve collision performance and passenger safety.
The electrical system has also been specially designed for 415-volt operation, compared with the conventional 750-volt system used in Indian Railways coaches.
The latest order builds on an established partnership between RCF and Bangladesh Railway. The two sides began their association with the successful supply of 120 LHB broad gauge passenger coaches during 2015-16.
Bangladesh Railway subsequently placed another major order with RCF through RITES in 2024 for the manufacture and supply of 200 broad gauge passenger coaches in seven variants.
The latest rake is part of that order and reflects India’s continued role in supporting the modernisation of Bangladesh’s railway infrastructure through customised rolling stock and technical cooperation.
The Ministry of Railways said the new coaches combine design changes, passenger amenities and enhanced safety provisions tailored to the requirements of Bangladesh Railway.
