India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, met Bangladesh President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday, with both sides emphasising the importance of strengthening bilateral relations for the mutual benefit of the people of the two neighbouring countries.
Trivedi paid a courtesy call on President Alamgir at Bangabhaban, the official residence of the Bangladesh President, where discussions focused on the longstanding relationship between India and Bangladesh and ways to further deepen cooperation.
The Indian High Commission in Dhaka said the meeting highlighted the deep-rooted bonds between the two countries, built on shared history, cultural connections and strong people-to-people ties.
“High Commissioner Shri Dinesh Trivedi paid a courtesy call on Hon’ble President of Bangladesh H.E. Mr Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at the Bangabhaban,” the mission said in a statement shared on social media.
The High Commissioner also conveyed warm greetings to the Bangladeshi President and wished him success in his continued service to the people of the country.
According to the Indian mission, both leaders underlined the need to strengthen the bilateral partnership, describing closer cooperation as being in the interests of the people of both sovereign nations.
The meeting came weeks after President Droupadi Murmu sent a congratulatory message to Alamgir following his assumption of office as Bangladesh’s 23rd President on August 21.
In her message, President Murmu expressed confidence that Alamgir’s long experience in public life and political leadership would contribute to a successful tenure.
She also highlighted the expanding scope of India-Bangladesh cooperation, noting that the relationship has grown beyond its traditional foundations to include areas such as energy, technology, connectivity, youth affairs, healthcare and education.
“India and Bangladesh share a unique relationship, rooted in a shared history of sacrifices, close cultural ties and warm bonds of friendship,” Murmu said, expressing hope for continued cooperation between the two countries.
The diplomatic engagement also comes amid discussions over a possible future visit by Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to India.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Trivedi expressed confidence that the Bangladeshi Prime Minister would visit India at an appropriate time, noting that Rahman has a standing invitation from New Delhi.
“We are absolutely confident… at the right time… the Prime Minister of Bangladesh has a standing invitation, and he knows it,” the Indian envoy was quoted as saying by local media.
India has also invited Rahman to attend the outreach session of the 18th BRICS Summit scheduled to be held in New Delhi, in his capacity as the current Chair of BIMSTEC.
The invitation was extended in line with the established practice of inviting heads of regional organisations to BRICS outreach sessions, according to India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
BIMSTEC, or the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, brings together seven countries across South and Southeast Asia — Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
The grouping is regarded as an important bridge between South Asia and Southeast Asia and focuses on expanding regional cooperation across multiple sectors.
The latest meeting between Trivedi and President Alamgir reflects continued diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and Dhaka as both countries seek to build on their historical ties and expand cooperation across economic, technological, cultural and regional platforms.
