Billionaire backs Republican candidates ahead of midterms, warning proposed political changes could reshape America’s democratic and electoral system…reports Asian Lite News Desk
Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has warned that a Democratic victory in the US Congress and presidency could fundamentally change the country’s political system, describing such an outcome as the “end of democracy” in a post on social media.
In a series of posts on X on Thursday, the SpaceX chief executive outlined his concerns about the possibility of Democrats securing control of the House of Representatives, Senate and presidency in the 2028 elections.
“It would be game over for America,” Musk wrote.
He argued that Democrats could use control of all three institutions to make Washington DC and Puerto Rico US states, legalise undocumented immigrants and expand the Supreme Court to secure a political advantage.
According to Musk, these changes could create a permanent Democratic majority and turn the United States into a one-party state.“This would result in America becoming a permanent one-party state and the end of democracy in any meaningful sense of the word,” he said.
Musk called on voters to support Republican Senate candidates in the November 3 midterm elections, arguing that Republicans would need at least 51 senators in 2029 to prevent the changes he described. “Other reasons are irrelevant compared to this one,” he added.
His intervention comes as Musk has emerged as one of the biggest financial backers of Republican candidates ahead of the midterm elections. According to campaign finance disclosures cited by The Hill, Musk has spent more than $442 million supporting Republican campaigns and political organisations. He recently contributed another $76.8 million to America PAC, the political action committee he established during the 2024 election cycle.
The latest contribution brought his spending on the upcoming elections beyond the $442 million mark, adding to the $366 million previously committed to Republican candidates and affiliated groups.
A substantial portion of his political funding has gone towards competitive Senate contests, particularly in Texas, where Republican candidate Ken Paxton is facing Democratic challenger James Talarico. According to CBS News, Musk donated $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund through two contributions in September. The organisation subsequently transferred corresponding amounts to a Texas-based political action committee supporting Paxton.
He also contributed $10 million to the pro-Paxton Lone Star Liberty PAC, $20 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, $10 million to the Republican Governors Association and $2 million to the Republican Attorneys General Association.
Meanwhile, a CBS News poll published on October 25 indicated that Democrats were positioned to win 229 seats in the House of Representatives in the 2026 midterm elections. However, Republicans retained a narrow path to maintaining their majority.
The November 3 elections will determine control of both chambers of Congress and could influence the direction of President Donald Trump’s legislative agenda.
Trump said on October 27 that he would respect the election results if the voting was conducted honestly. He also pointed to his presidential veto powers when discussing the possibility of a Democratic-controlled Congress.
The political contest is unfolding amid concerns about inflation, economic conditions and the administration’s approval ratings. A Wall Street Journal poll published in September put Trump’s approval rating at 37 per cent.
Musk’s latest intervention marks a renewed push into Republican political campaigning following his public disagreement with Trump last year. He had previously spent more than a quarter of a billion dollars supporting Trump and other Republican candidates during the 2024 election cycle.
