Nepal Chief Justice Begins Five-Day India Visit

The visit is aimed at strengthening judicial cooperation as both countries continue to expand institutional exchanges between their supreme courts…reports Asian Lite News Desk

Nepal’s Chief Justice Manoj Kumar Sharma left for New Delhi on Thursday on a five-day official visit to India at the invitation of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, in a move aimed at further strengthening judicial cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.

According to a statement issued by the Supreme Court of Nepal, Sharma departed on an Air India flight and is scheduled to visit the Supreme Court of India during his stay. He is expected to return to Nepal on July 27.

The delegation accompanying the Chief Justice includes his spouse, Uma Sharma, and Joint Registrar Amit Upreti.

The Supreme Court of Nepal did not disclose further details about the itinerary or any bilateral meetings planned during the visit.

Judicial exchanges between Nepal and India have become increasingly frequent in recent years as the two countries seek to deepen institutional cooperation between their highest courts.

In November last year, Nepal’s then Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut travelled to New Delhi to attend the swearing-in ceremony of India’s current Chief Justice, Surya Kant.

Earlier, in September 2025, then Chief Justice of India Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai visited Kathmandu at the invitation of Nepal’s Supreme Court to participate in the Nepal-India Judicial Dialogue.

During the visit, Gavai delivered the keynote address at the Nepal-India Dialogue on recent jurisprudence and justice sector reform.

The event brought together members of the Indian delegation, judges of Nepal’s Supreme Court and High Courts, former chief justices, legal experts, human rights advocates, climate change specialists and other stakeholders to discuss developments in the justice sector.

Judicial cooperation between the two countries was further strengthened in April 2025 when Nepal’s then Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut paid a five-day official visit to India.

During that visit, the Supreme Courts of Nepal and India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop, promote and strengthen judicial cooperation.

The agreement was signed in the presence of then Nepali Chief Justice Raut and then Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna.

“Inspired by the cordial and friendly relations existing between the two countries and their people, the MoU aims at developing, promoting, and strengthening cooperation between the judiciaries of the two countries,” the Supreme Court of India said in a statement issued after the signing ceremony.

Earlier, in May 2024, India’s then Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud made a historic three-day official visit to Nepal at the invitation of Nepal’s then Chief Justice Bishwambhar Prasad Shrestha, reflecting the growing engagement between the two judiciaries.

The latest visit by Chief Justice Sharma continues a series of high-level judicial exchanges that both countries view as an important mechanism for enhancing cooperation, sharing legal expertise and strengthening institutional ties.
