Nepali authorities have issued an alert for communities along the Budhigandaki River after flooding in the mountainous Gorkha district swept away four houses and a suspension bridge.
The flooding occurred in the Therang River, which flows through wards 2 and 4 of Chumanubri Rural Municipality, early on Sunday.
According to the District Police Office, four homes belonging to local residents were washed away as floodwaters carrying mud and debris surged through the area.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Rajkumar Shrestha said no casualties had been reported, as residents managed to flee to safety after noticing the rapidly rising waters.
“The residents managed to flee to safety after learning about the rising floodwaters. The suspension bridge in the area was also swept away by the river,” Shrestha said.
The loss of the bridge is expected to disrupt movement in the remote region and could create difficulties for trekkers travelling through the popular Manaslu trekking circuit.
Chumanubri Rural Municipality chairperson Nima Lama said local authorities were considering temporary measures to restore pedestrian access.
Officials said the flood temporarily blocked the river’s outlet, causing water and debris to spread into surrounding areas.
Assistant Chief District Officer Netra Prasad Sharma said the situation was being closely monitored, particularly because the Therang River eventually joins the Budhigandaki River downstream.
Authorities have urged residents living along the Budhigandaki basin to remain alert to possible flooding.
The incident comes amid heightened concerns over flooding and landslides in Nepal’s mountainous regions, where heavy rainfall can rapidly swell rivers and cut off remote communities.
