Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima arrived in New Delhi on Friday to attend the 18th BRICS Summit, scheduled to be held on September 12 and 13.

Shettima was received at Indira Gandhi International Airport by Shantanu Thakur, Minister of State in the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.

“Cordially welcome Vice-President Senator Kashim Shettima of Nigeria as he arrives in New Delhi for the 18th BRICS Summit. He was received by MoS Shantanu Thakur at the airport,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a post on X.

The ministry said India and Nigeria share close and longstanding ties, supported by strong people-to-people connections, and added that Shettima’s visit would further strengthen the multifaceted partnership between the two countries.

Ahead of his departure for India, Shettima met India’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Abhishek Singh, on Thursday to review progress in bilateral cooperation and discuss areas for further collaboration.

The Indian High Commission in Nigeria said the meeting explored opportunities to strengthen the India-Nigeria Strategic Partnership across areas including economic engagement, energy, agriculture, capacity building, security and people-to-people ties.

The High Commission described the meeting as a “warm and productive exchange”, reflecting the two countries’ shared commitment to an enduring and mutually beneficial partnership.

Shettima is leading a Nigerian delegation to the BRICS Summit, where the country is expected to further advance shared priorities and cooperation with India and other participating nations.

As BRICS Chair for 2026, India will host the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, bringing together leaders of BRICS member and partner countries as well as outreach invitees.

According to the MEA, leaders will discuss ways to strengthen intra-BRICS cooperation on common priorities and exchange views on global and regional issues of mutual importance.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier said leaders from around the world would gather in New Delhi for the summit and expressed confidence that the high-level meeting would lead to positive and meaningful discussions focused on global welfare.

“Over the next few days, leaders from around the world will gather for the BRICS Summit. I am confident that the Summit will see positive and meaningful discussions on various issues with the welfare of the world in mind,” Modi said in a post on X.

The 18th BRICS Summit will be held in New Delhi on September 12-13.
