Emirati mountaineer Fatima Abdulrahman Al Awadhi has etched her name into history after conquering Mount Vinson, the highest peak in Antarctica, becoming the youngest and first Arab to reach its summit at just 18 years old.
Rising 4,892 metres above the frozen continent, Mount Vinson is among the most remote and unforgiving climbs on Earth. Al Awadhi reached the summit on Tuesday, 6 January 2026, marking a defining milestone not only in her personal journey but also for the Arab world. The achievement represents the third major peak in her ambitious pursuit of the Seven Summits, the highest mountains on each continent.
She dedicated the historic ascent to President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and to H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the Mother of the Nation, citing their unwavering support for Emirati youth and women and their role in empowering new generations to dream without limits.
A Historic First for the Arab World
Al Awadhi’s ascent places her firmly among a small global elite of high-altitude climbers, while breaking new ground for Arab representation in extreme mountaineering. At an age when many are only beginning university life, she has already taken on some of the world’s most formidable peaks.
The climb followed weeks of preparation and a demanding expedition through Antarctica’s harsh interior, where temperatures plunged below minus 40 degrees Celsius. Battling powerful winds, isolation and relentless cold, the journey required exceptional physical endurance and mental resilience.
Describing the experience, Al Awadhi said Mount Vinson tested her more than any previous climb, forcing her to rely on inner strength and self-discipline. Standing atop the peak, she said, transformed fear into clarity, leaving her deeply moved by Antarctica’s stark beauty and vastness.
Backed by a Nation That Believes in Youth
The expedition was supported by Palms Sports, a UAE-based global sports management and training company with a strong record of nurturing Emirati talent. Additional sponsorship came from Dar Al Takaful Finance, which had earlier backed Al Awadhi’s successful ascent of Mount Elbrus, Europe’s highest peak, in July 2025.
Al Awadhi expressed heartfelt gratitude to the UAE’s leadership for creating an environment where ambition is encouraged and young people are supported in pursuing bold goals. Raising the UAE flag atop the world’s highest peaks, she said, symbolises the nation’s 54-year journey of opportunity, progress and inspiration.
She emphasised that the moment carried a powerful national message: with the backing of wise leadership, Emiratis are capable of overcoming even the harshest challenges on the global stage.
Inspiring a Generation Beyond the Mountains
Currently a university student majoring in Economics, Al Awadhi has consistently highlighted the importance of balancing academic achievement with personal ambition. She believes success is not limited to summits, but extends to education, careers and personal growth.
Addressing young Arabs, particularly women, she urged them to pursue their ambitions without delay. She stressed that today’s youth are not merely the leaders of tomorrow, but active contributors shaping the present.
Her ascent of Mount Vinson also moves her closer to the prestigious Explorer’s Grand Slam, a rare global challenge involving the Seven Summits and journeys to both the North and South Poles. With each expedition, Al Awadhi is strengthening the UAE’s presence in adventure sports while emerging as a powerful role model for resilience, determination and possibility.
