The United Kingdom is hosting General Anil Chauhan for a three day official visit beginning April 19, marking the first time an Indian Chief of Defence Staff has travelled to the UK in an official capacity.
General Chauhan is being received by his British counterpart, Air Chief Marshal Richard Knighton, with talks expected to centre on strengthening cooperation in training, joint operations and defence industrial partnerships.
During his visit, the Indian military chief is scheduled to hold discussions with senior civil and military leadership in the UK, alongside engagements with representatives from the British defence industry. These interactions are aimed at advancing conversations around co production and deeper industrial collaboration.
He will also visit the Royal College of Defence Studies, where he is set to engage with a diverse group of international military professionals, reflecting the broader strategic dialogue between the two countries.
The visit comes amid steadily expanding defence ties between India and the United Kingdom, following a series of high level exchanges in recent months. Among them was the visit of Air Chief Marshal Harv Smyth to India in March, signalling increased momentum in bilateral military engagement.
Lindy Cameron said the visit reflects the growing trust and ambition underpinning the UK India defence partnership. She noted that both sides are stepping up efforts to enhance interoperability, drive innovation and contribute to a free, open and secure Indo Pacific.
She added that cooperation is advancing across areas such as joint training, defence industry collaboration and strategic dialogue, with India emerging as a key defence partner for the UK.
Echoing this sentiment, Commodore Chris Saunders described the visit as a sign of significant progress in bilateral defence relations. He said it offers an opportunity to further deepen military to military engagement, expand training cooperation and explore new avenues for defence industrial collaboration.
Saunders also highlighted the shared interest of both countries in leveraging defence as an engine for economic growth, while supporting India’s broader push towards greater self reliance in the sector.
The visit is expected to further consolidate the evolving defence partnership between India and the UK, with both sides looking to build on recent momentum and expand cooperation across strategic and industrial domains.
