External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar on Tuesday congratulated Ed Miliband on his appointment as the United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary and said he looked forward to working with him to further deepen cooperation between the two countries.
“Congratulate Ed Miliband on his appointment as UK Foreign Secretary. The India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership has witnessed a strong momentum in recent years, including the entry into force of CETA. Look forward to working together to advance our cooperation,” Jaishankar posted on X.
Miliband was appointed Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs on Monday. He has served as the Member of Parliament for Doncaster North since 2005 and succeeds to one of the UK’s most senior Cabinet roles after serving as Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero from July 2024 to July 2026.
A veteran Labour politician, Miliband previously held several ministerial positions, including Minister for the Cabinet Office in 2007 and Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change between 2008 and 2010. During that period, he oversaw the introduction of the Climate Change Act 2008, making the UK the first country to enshrine legally binding climate targets.
He also served as Leader of the Labour Party and Leader of the Opposition from 2010 to 2015 and later held a series of shadow cabinet portfolios, including Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and Shadow Secretary of State for Energy and Net Zero.
Miliband is no stranger to India-UK cooperation. In 2025, as Secretary for Energy Security and Net Zero, he co-chaired the Fourth India-UK Energy Dialogue with Union Minister of Power and Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal.
The meeting reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation across the energy sector, particularly in power and renewable energy, and led to the launch of the UK-India Offshore Wind Taskforce to promote offshore wind ecosystem development, strengthen supply chains and explore financing models in both countries.
The ministers also reviewed collaboration on offshore wind and green hydrogen trade missions, as well as cooperation between the UK’s Energy Systems Catapult and India’s Power Trading Corporation.
