The US Department of the Treasury has sanctioned several Iranian officials for the “brutal” ongoing crackdown on nationwide protests in Iran over death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in the custody of the “morality police”.

“Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is designating 10 Iranian officials for the brutal ongoing crackdown on nationwide protests in Iran, as well as two Iranian intelligence actors and two Iranian entities involved in the Iranian government’s efforts to disrupt digital freedom,” Treasury Department said in a press release.

Iran is gripped in massive protests after death of Amini’s arrest and death in the custody of Iran’s Morality Police and the ongoing brutal crackdown on peaceful protests in Iran. Hundreds were dead and thousands are in prison, media reported.

“Forty days after the tragic death of Mahsa Amini, Iranians continue to bravely protest in the face of brutal suppression and disruption of internet access,” said Under Secretary of the Treasury Brian E. Nelson. “The United States is imposing new sanctions on Iranian officials overseeing organizations involved in violent crackdowns and killings, including of children, as part of our commitment to hold all levels of the Iranian government accountable for its repression.”

The Treasury also announced that it has sanctioned Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) officials including the commander of its intelligence wing and also the provincial and Iranian prison officials. Officials involved in internet censorship throughout Iran are also targeted with sanctions.

The sanctions targeted Hedayat Farzadi, who is the warden of Evin prison, where most of the political prisoners are lodged. The US also claimed that the prisoners are subjected to torture in the prison and Farzadi is overseeing the torture and mistreatment. The Treasury Department also informed that before taking charge of the prison, Farzadi has been known to carry out executions and public amputations, it was reported.
