Women Drive India’s Startup Growth

Launched in 2016, the Startup India initiative aims to build a robust ecosystem for innovation and investment

India’s startup ecosystem is witnessing a significant shift towards inclusivity, with over 1 lakh recognised startups now having at least one woman director or partner, according to government data presented in Parliament.

As per figures shared by Jitin Prasada in the Lok Sabha, more than 1.02 lakh out of 2.12 lakh startups recognised by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade include women in leadership roles. The data highlights the growing participation of women in entrepreneurship and decision-making within India’s rapidly expanding startup landscape.

At the same time, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs reported that 6,789 recognised startups have shut down, of which 2,950 had at least one woman director or partner. While closures remain part of the natural lifecycle of startups, the figures underline that women-led or women-inclusive ventures are equally engaged in high-risk, high-growth sectors.

Financial backing for startups has also seen steady expansion. Supported Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs) have collectively invested around Rs 25,859 crore in selected startups. Of this, nearly Rs 2,995 crore has been channelled into women-led ventures since 2020, reflecting targeted efforts to encourage gender diversity in entrepreneurship.

Government-backed schemes continue to play a crucial role in nurturing early-stage ventures. The Startup India Seed Fund Scheme, launched in 2021, has approved approximately Rs 592 crore for startups, with about Rs 294 crore earmarked specifically for women-led businesses. This allocation signals a focused push to empower female founders at the seed stage, often considered the most challenging phase for funding.

Launched in 2016, the Startup India initiative aims to build a robust ecosystem for innovation and investment. Flagship programmes such as the Fund of Funds for Startups, the Seed Fund Scheme and the Credit Guarantee Scheme for Startups are designed to support businesses across different stages of growth.

The Credit Guarantee Scheme, operational since April 2023, has so far guaranteed loans worth around Rs 925 crore to startup borrowers, including approximately Rs 39 crore for women-led ventures. These measures are intended to ease access to capital and reduce financial barriers for emerging entrepreneurs.

Meanwhile, India’s broader tech startup ecosystem continues to mature. Funding reached $9.1 billion in 2025, marking a 23 per cent year-on-year increase. However, investment trends indicate a shift from rapid expansion to a more selective, performance-driven approach, with capital increasingly directed towards scalable and commercially viable ventures.

Taken together, the data points to a more inclusive and evolving startup environment — one where women are not only participating but actively shaping the future of innovation and enterprise in India.
