Historic Male Kuchipudi Debut in UK

Young dancer’s powerful Rangapravesham challenges stereotypes .Two-hour performance marks revival of male presence in classical form…reports Asian Lite News Desk

In a landmark moment for Indian classical arts in the United Kingdom, young artiste Vaishnav Dachavaram delivered one of the first traditional male Kuchipudi Rangapraveshams in the country, presenting a full two-hour margam with remarkable stamina, precision and emotional depth.

The performance took place on February 22 at the Watersmeet Theatre, where audiences witnessed a rare and culturally significant debut that highlighted both artistic excellence and social resilience.

Kuchipudi, a classical dance form rooted in male temple traditions, has in recent years seen fewer boys taking it up professionally. Vaishnav’s journey into the art form was not without challenges. As a young male dancer, he faced teasing and bullying, but chose to rise above societal stereotypes with determination and focus.

Instead of being discouraged, he channelled these experiences into his training, demonstrating discipline and an unwavering commitment to his craft. His Rangapravesham showcased intricate rhythmic sequences, expressive abhinaya and technically demanding choreography, all performed with confidence beyond his years.

Vaishnav has been trained under the guidance of his mother and गुरु Smt. Deepa ViswaMohan, founder of Abhinaya Fine Arts in the UK, who has nurtured his artistic growth through years of structured and traditional training.

The audience responded with admiration, describing the performance as both inspiring and culturally enriching. Many noted the significance of seeing a young male dancer reclaim space in a form historically associated with male performers.

More than just a debut, the evening stood as a powerful statement that classical dance transcends gender boundaries. It marked a proud moment for Kuchipudi in the UK and underscored the emergence of a promising young artiste who chose passion over prejudice.
