Trump Hails TS Sandhu On Delhi Appointment

Trump hails Taranjit Sandhu’s new Delhi role, praising his diplomatic legacy and signalling continued importance of strong India-US ties amid evolving global partnerships, reports Asian Lite Newsdesk

United States President Donald Trump has congratulated Taranjit Singh Sandhu on his appointment as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, praising the former diplomat’s role in strengthening ties between India and the United States.

The message, shared by the United States Embassy in India on Friday, highlighted Sandhu’s long diplomatic career and his contribution to advancing bilateral relations during his tenure as India’s Ambassador to Washington. Trump described Sandhu as a “seasoned diplomat” who has shown a deep commitment to the India-US partnership, expressing confidence in his ability to guide Delhi’s development while maintaining strong international engagement.

Sandhu, who served as India’s Ambassador to the United States from 2020 to 2024, played a key role during a period marked by closer strategic coordination between the two countries. His tenure coincided with growing cooperation across defence, trade, and technology, as both nations sought to deepen ties amid shifting global dynamics.

Before his ambassadorial posting, Sandhu held several important assignments within the Indian Foreign Service, including multiple stints at the Indian Embassy in Washington, where he built extensive experience in managing the complex and evolving relationship with the United States. He also served at India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, where he worked on multilateral diplomacy and global policy issues.

Widely regarded as one of India’s most experienced diplomats on US affairs, Sandhu has been involved in shaping India’s engagement with key global partners over several decades. His diplomatic work has spanned bilateral relations, international negotiations, and strategic policy coordination.

Following his retirement from the civil service, Sandhu entered politics by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He was fielded as the party’s candidate from Amritsar but was unsuccessful in securing the seat.

He was sworn in as Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor on March 11 at the Lok Niwas, with the oath administered by Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya in the presence of senior political leaders, including Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Union ministers.

Since assuming office, Sandhu has emphasised the need for a “solution-oriented approach” to governance in the national capital, calling for cooperation across political lines to address Delhi’s administrative and developmental challenges.

Trump’s message is being seen as a reflection of Sandhu’s diplomatic standing and the continued importance both countries attach to the India-US relationship. His appointment to a key constitutional role in Delhi also signals a transition from diplomacy to governance, bringing his international experience into a domestic administrative framework.
