President Droupadi Murmu arrived in North Macedonia on Tuesday (Indian time) for the second leg of her three-nation visit, marking the first-ever visit by an Indian President to the Balkan nation and signalling a further strengthening of bilateral relations.
President Murmu arrived in the capital, Skopje, after concluding her visit to Moldova, where she held bilateral talks and attended business engagements aimed at expanding economic cooperation.
On her arrival, the President was welcomed by North Macedonia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Timcho Mucunski.
Announcing her arrival, the President’s Office shared the update on X, while the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described the visit as a milestone in relations between the two countries.
“This is the first-ever visit by an Indian President to North Macedonia, highlighting the growing warmth in bilateral ties. The visit will further deepen India-North Macedonia relations and open new avenues for cooperation across diverse sectors,” the MEA said in a post on X.
President Murmu is visiting North Macedonia at the invitation of President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova and will remain in the country until July 22.
During the visit, she is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with President Siljanovska-Davkova and Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski. She will also meet the President of the Assembly, address lawmakers and participate in the India-North Macedonia Business Forum.
The two countries are expected to discuss expanding cooperation in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, science and technology, information technology and IT-enabled services, with a focus on strengthening economic and commercial engagement.
Before arriving in North Macedonia, President Murmu completed the first leg of her tour in Moldova, where she met President Maia Sandu at the Presidential Palace in Chisinau for bilateral discussions.
She also addressed the India-Moldova Business Forum, promoting stronger trade and investment links while discussing opportunities to deepen cooperation in technology, agriculture and affordable healthcare.
The final leg of President Murmu’s tour will take her to Romania from July 23 to 25 at the invitation of President Nicuşor Dan. The visit will be the first by an Indian President to Romania in more than 30 years.
In Romania, President Murmu is scheduled to hold talks with President Dan and interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. She will also meet Romanian Senate President Mircea Abrudean, Chamber of Deputies President Sorin Grindeanu and members of the Romania-India Parliamentary Friendship Group.
Her itinerary also includes addressing the India-Romania Business Forum and interacting with members of the Indian diaspora.
The MEA said Romania remains an important partner for India within the European Union and noted that the proposed India-EU Free Trade Agreement is expected to provide fresh momentum to bilateral economic ties.
According to the ministry, President Murmu’s three-nation tour reflects India’s growing engagement with Eastern Europe through stronger political dialogue, increased trade and investment, and expanded people-to-people exchanges.
