China Tops Nepal’s Deportation List

Chinese citizens accounted for the largest share of foreign nationals deported from Nepal for immigration violations over the five years from 2021 to 2025….reports Asian Lite News Desk

Chinese nationals accounted for the largest number of foreign citizens deported from Nepal for violating immigration laws between 2021 and 2025, according to data released by Nepal’s Department of Immigration.

The department said 695 Chinese citizens were expelled during the five-year period, accounting for 30.65 per cent of the 2,267 foreign nationals deported from Nepal.

US citizens ranked second, with 191 deportations, followed by Bangladesh with 145. Nationals of the UK and Pakistan ranked fourth and fifth respectively.

The Department of Immigration said foreign nationals can be deported for violating immigration laws, breaching visa conditions or becoming involved in illegal activities. Fines are imposed and collected as prescribed by law before deportation.

“The figures indicate comparatively higher risks of immigration-law violations among nationals of certain countries and point to the need for continued monitoring of foreign nationals entering and staying in Nepal,” the department said in its annual report.

The department said its monitoring and management of foreign nationals through the Foreign National Management Information System (FNMIS) and NepaliPort system is expected to further reduce cases of visa misuse.

Chinese nationals also topped Nepal’s deportation figures in 2025. Of the 523 foreign nationals expelled that year, 120 were Chinese, accounting for 22.94 per cent of the total.

The number of Chinese nationals deported was particularly high in 2023, when 209 were expelled. They accounted for 46 per cent of all foreign nationals deported by Nepal that year.

Overall deportations fluctuated considerably during the five-year period. Nepal deported 523 foreign nationals in 2025, around 15 per cent above the five-year annual average of 453.

The highest number of deportations was recorded in 2022, when 570 foreign nationals were expelled, while 2021 saw the lowest figure, with 218 deportations.

The immigration authorities said continued monitoring of foreign nationals and the use of digital systems would help strengthen visa compliance and management of foreigners entering and staying in Nepal.
