Pakistan lodges protest over US ambassador’s J&K comments

Pakistan on Wednesday summoned the US Chargé d’Affaires in Islamabad and lodged a formal protest over remarks made by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor during his recent visit to Jammu and Kashmir.

According to Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Islamabad delivered a demarche over what it described as the Ambassador’s “factually incorrect” comments concerning the status of Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistan “condemned and categorically rejected” Gor’s characterisation of Jammu and Kashmir as an “important part of India”. Gor had made the remarks during his visit to the region and also said the US would reconsider its travel advisories.

Islamabad reiterated its position that Jammu and Kashmir is an internationally recognised “disputed territory” whose “final disposition” should be determined in accordance with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

The Pakistani Foreign Ministry said Gor’s comments during his visit to what it refers to as “Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK)” were contrary to what it considers established facts and longstanding international positions.

It further described the Ambassador’s remarks as an “irresponsible statement” that, in its view, contradicted the United States’ long-standing position on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.

Pakistan also said the comments were inconsistent with Washington’s stated commitment to international law and the UN Charter.

While referring to US President Donald Trump’s offer to mediate between India and Pakistan on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute following Marka-e-Haq, Islamabad urged Washington to ensure that its public statements remained consistent with what Pakistan considers the disputed status of the territory.

Pakistani officials maintained that the issue remains unresolved and should be settled in accordance with the will of the Kashmiri people, as outlined in successive UN Security Council resolutions.

The demarche represents a formal diplomatic protest by Islamabad and highlights Pakistan’s continued objection to statements by foreign officials regarding the status of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Foreign Ministry reiterated that the future of the territory should be determined through the international process rather than unilateral assertions.

The issue remains a longstanding point of contention between India and Pakistan, which have held competing positions over Jammu and Kashmir since the partition of British India in 1947.
