Former Ealing Southall MP Virendra Sharma has expressed his solidarity with Nepal following devastating floods and landslides that have caused widespread destruction, loss of life and left thousands of people missing.
Sharma, who previously served as Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Nepal, said he was deeply saddened by the disaster and offered his condolences to families who have lost loved ones or are still waiting for news of missing relatives and friends.
The former Labour MP said his connection with Nepal was both personal and parliamentary, having visited the country several times during his time in Parliament.
During those visits, Sharma said he met political leaders, academics, community representatives and people across the country, experiences which strengthened his admiration for the resilience, warmth and dignity of the Nepali people.
He said it was particularly painful to see communities across Nepal facing such widespread suffering as a result of the floods and landslides.
Sharma also paid tribute to the Nepalese authorities, armed forces, police, emergency services, health workers, volunteers and local communities involved in rescue and relief operations.
He said those working on the ground were facing extremely difficult conditions as they continued efforts to rescue survivors, provide emergency assistance and support communities affected by the disaster.
The former MP said the scale of the tragedy also highlighted the importance of international cooperation and stronger disaster preparedness, particularly as vulnerable communities face increasingly severe environmental challenges.
Sharma stressed that the people of Nepal should know they were not alone and expressed his solidarity with both those affected in Nepal and the Nepali diaspora in the United Kingdom.
His comments come as communities grapple with the devastating impact of the floods and landslides, with rescue and relief efforts continuing amid concerns for those still missing.
Sharma said his thoughts remained with the families who had lost loved ones and those anxiously awaiting news of missing relatives and friends.
He also offered his hopes for the safe recovery of those still missing and for strength and unity among the people of Nepal in the difficult days ahead.
