ISL Returns

The announcement ends months of uncertainty after talks between FSDL and the AIFF broke down…reports Asian Lite News

The long-delayed new season of the Indian Super League (ISL) will begin on February 14, with all 14 clubs confirming their participation, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced on Tuesday.

The confirmation brings an end to months of uncertainty surrounding the future of India’s premier football competition, which had been in limbo following the breakdown of talks between Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) and the All India Football Federation (AIFF). The dispute centred on the renewal of the Master Rights Agreement (MRA), under which FSDL operates the ISL.

FSDL had earlier declined to launch the 2025–26 season at its customary time, citing concerns that the existing MRA was due to expire on December 8, 2025 — midway through the season — with no clarity on an extension. The uncertainty triggered fears that the league could be postponed indefinitely, raising concerns among players, clubs and fans.

Addressing reporters in New Delhi, Mandaviya said the government had worked closely with all stakeholders to resolve the impasse. “Due to a court dispute, there was a lot of uncertainty around the Indian Super League. Today, the government, AIFF and representatives of all 14 clubs have come together and decided to restart the league. The national football league will kick off from February 14,” he said.

The minister added that all participating clubs have formally agreed to take part in the upcoming season. Further details regarding the tournament format, match venues, broadcasting platforms and scheduling will be announced in due course. Once these aspects are finalised, clubs will be able to reassemble their squads and begin preparations for the season.

The delay had earlier prompted strong reactions from leading Indian footballers, who publicly appealed for intervention to safeguard the future of the sport. Several national team players, along with overseas professionals competing in the league, had urged FIFA to step in and help resolve the crisis.

Senior India internationals such as Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, Sandesh Jhingan and Sunil Chhetri voiced their concerns through public statements and social media messages. In a widely shared video, Gurpreet said it was already January and players should have been competing in the ISL, rather than facing uncertainty over their careers. Jhingan spoke of the fear and desperation gripping the football community, while Chhetri stressed that players, staff, club owners and fans all deserved clarity, stability and a secure future.

With the February 14 kickoff now confirmed, Indian football stakeholders will hope the announcement marks a turning point after a turbulent period, allowing the focus to return to action on the pitch and the continued growth of the domestic game.
